After falling just short of the MSL East title last year, the BG girls tennis team is looking to comeback this year and claim the title for its own. According to head coach Kevin Schrammel, the team hopes to finish first in their conference and win the conference title.

However there have been some bumps in the road towards this goal due to the loss of last year’s seniors. These spots are to be filled by girls who are on both varsity and JV teams.

“Anytime you lose your number one singles and doubles players there is going to be a hole left in the line-up,” Schrammel said. “We plan to fill those spots with girls on the Varsity and JV teams who are ready step up and excel in those spots.”

The girls have also noticed how Schrammel has been shuffling up  the team in order for them to be successful this season.

“Coach Schrammel has been reworking the lineup this season and is really trying to put everyone at a place where they will thrive,” senior Maddie Delano said. “I think this will really help us to obtain our goal, if we’re all reaching our full potential,”

The team has set their standards high this year. Senior Jessie Jarosz has set goals for herself and her partner to get far in this calendar season.

“My goals for this season are to win the east division, go to sectionals and hopefully go to State.” Jarosz said. “In order to accomplish these goals my doubles partner and I need to try our best to be cohesive and try our best to go out on the court to be successful”

According to Delano, Many teams present a challenge, but Hersey and Barrington are the toughest opponents that the team faces in the conference.

“I would have to say Hersey is our toughest opponent because they force us to play a more mental game, rather than just physical,” Delano said. “Barrington,on the other hand, challenges us with a more hard-hitting physical game.”

Both Delano and Jarosz look forward to becoming closer with their fellow teammates this season. This team bonding is expressed through pasta parties and theme days according to Delano.

The team has set some high expectations for this year after the result of last year. While these goals are not easy to achieve, Schrammel feels positive that the team will achieve them.

“We certainly have a chance to qualify one or multiple positions in the top of our line-up (1 & 2 singles/1 & 2 doubles) for State,” Schrammel said.  “Our sectional is always one of the toughest in the state, but I like our chances of sending an individual or a doubles team to State.”
