BG Coed Cheer wins 4th State title under Siegal’s guidance
This year’s cheer team flourished through the season with many triumphs. The team won the MSL Conference, the Co-Ed challenge, the Rolling Meadows invite, the Grayslake North invite, and they were Sectional Champions.
Their greatest accomplishment by far, however, was becoming Illinois State Champions. Jeff Siegal coached and trained this year’s team. Siegal is considered one of the most decorated cheer coaches in IHSA history with nine State championships.
“It’s so surreal. You sit there and you hear your name called off, and you’re like did this really just happen?” Siegal said. “And just what a great feeling. And to watch the smiles on the kids faces and their tears of joy.”
Leading their team to victory were seniors such as Sarah Moore, Jack Cadre, Joshua Sierra, Zach Wojotowicz, and Olivia Soboszek.
“I wasn’t expecting it but I felt really confident and I knew what we were going to do and that we were going to do it well,” Cadre said.
The competition was held early February down in Bloomington, Illinois. The suspense swelled each of them as they eagerly anticipated the results. When Buffalo Grove was announced as State champions the athletes were filled with pride, some even falling to the ground with tears of joy.
“Hearing Buffalo Grove being named State champions is one of my favorite memories,” junior Stanley Szuberla said.
The team won with a score of 94.57 points, beating out Huntley who scored 94.13 and South Elgin with a 93.90. This accomplishment will go down in the books as this is the fourth state title in cheerleading history and the seventh State championship in all of Buffalo Grove’s history.
Not only did they sustain many wins but a sense of family was created amongst the team. They became a very close knit group and each victory was celebrated as a team.
Congrats to BG Coed cheer on a well deserved State Championship!
